Coming from England to play rugby union in Sydney in the late 1980’s Dave has a diverse background in business ownership and management having operated a number of businesses including a major regional fitness centre, a sport and event marketing consultancy and a sport and athlete management business. He has been responsible for the conception, marketing and management of a number of major events including international rugby union matches, Masters Games and music festivals. Dave has a long record of major consultancy through his company Sport Business Resources (t/a DSA Consulting Services) having worked with Mastercard International, Pacific Rugby Limited (PRL), University of New England, the Australian Sports Commission, the National Rugby League, Greyhound Racing New South Wales and South Sydney District Rugby League Club as well as numerous local government authorities and other generally sport based organisations. In addition he is a freelance journalist who has contributed over 900 columns to a major regional newspaper and in 2003 he was an accredited journalist for the Rugby World Cup. He has appeared on the ABC’s 7.30 Report and is often called upon as an ad hoc commentator on the business of sport by international news organisations including the BBC, ABC, and Reuters.
Academically his work has been published in a range of internationally renowned journals including Sport Marketing Quarterly, the Journal of Sport Management and Festival and Event Management. His first book, International Cases in the Business of Sport was published in 2008 (a second edition is currently in press). In addition he has written numerous book chapters on various aspects of the business of sport, sport management, sport education, event management, sport marketing and is currently researching and writing a number of books. Dave has also disseminated much of his non-commercially sensitive work through industry and academic conference presentations. His main research interests include sport education and engagement, the commercialisation of sport, sponsorship, relationship marketing and the marketing of sport (a full publication record is available on request).
In terms of his consultancy business, Dave has been commissioned by premier global rugby league brand the National Rugby League on four separate occasions including twice for projects involving extensive reviews of match official structures at all levels. Following this he was described in the Australian as a “leading sport business consultant”. He has made two international rugby union tours as media and communications director for Pacific Rugby Limited (PRL) in 2006 (Tests v Wales, Scotland and Ireland) and 2008 (England, France and Italy). In 2011, he was commissioned by global credit card company, Mastercard where, together with the Centre for the International Business of Sport (CIBS) he researched the economic impact of RWC 2011 in New Zealand. Following a global media event and keynote presentation in Auckland, in excess of 350 articles in 21 different countries were attributed (further details under employment history, a full list available on request).
Dave recently left Southern Cross University to pursue his consultancy work on a full time basis with a clear intention to synthesise his sport business/sport education knowledge. With unrivalled practical and theoretical knowledge and experience in this sector he has developed everything from entire sport courses through to relatively simple units. He is also widely regarded as pre-eminent in the field of online sport business education and developed the world’s first fully online sport business course. In addition to sport education, Dave’s major specialisations within the sport business sector are research, strategy and sport organisation. He revels in short to medium term projects that have the potential to make a difference.
